Kenny G

I DIED AND went to heaven! However I lived to write about it.

I had the chance to see Kenny G, my all-time favorite musician, recently at the Las Vegas Hilton where he had a two night gig. On this night the sounds of the contemporary jazz superstar Kenny Gorelick resonated throughout the Barry Manilow Theatre.

Along with the smooth and romantic soprano saxophonists' Forever in Love and his mellow signature tune Songbird, Kenny G and his band played many of the familiar hits that made him one of the most popular musical artists in the world. He and his band delighted his many fans in the audience with creative arrangements (somewhat different than the studio cuts) of many of his top hits like Havana, Silhouette, Every Time I Close My Eyes and Going Home.

His percussionist (one of the band members that has been with Kenny for more than a decade) did a couple of pieces that were, alone, worth the price of admission, and the guitarist did a solo of The Moment that "brought the house down." The younger members of the audience really loved that one.

Kenny G, who began professionally with the Barry White orchestra in the mid-'70s and worked with Jeff Lorber, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole, still caresses melodies and puts a lot of emotion into his solos.

All and all this musical experience was one of the most enjoyable concerts this writer has ever attended. Do yourself a favor and catch Kenny G the next time he's at the Hilton.
