Rita Rudner Writes About a Different Vegas Party Scene -- LUXE LIFE GUEST COLUMNISTThursday, July 5, 2006
I know the Vegas parties normally discussed on this website
feature names like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan and always occur at the
hippest hangouts in town. Don’t think I haven’t checked these nightclubs out,
because I have… but only during the day. My husband and I are the proud parents
of a four-year-old daughter and a dog on diuretics; this leaves us roughly six
hours of interrupted sleep a night, so clubbing with the beautiful people is
quite simply a non-starter. That’s not to say we’re not party people. We are.
And in today’s column I shall be reporting on a very special Vegas party that
happened this weekend.

It was a party to which only a select few were invited and
it took months of preparation. It was my daughter’s fourth birthday party and
quite a bash it was. Celebrating ages one through three had been a breeze. At
these ages children’s frames of reference are rather narrow; they don’t have
many friends and haven’t really experienced a full-blown celebration. We got
off easy. We bought cakes, hats, invited some strangers and she was totally
satisfied. At four everything changes.
“Mommy, Krystal had pony rides at her birthday party. What
am I going to have?”
“Well, honey, we have a dog on diuretics. I’m pretty sure
he’s available,” I replied.
That answer didn’t fly. Four was going to be a very
different experience to one, two and three.
The planning of a child’s birthday party becomes
significantly more difficult when you live in an apartment. Ponies are out of
the question as are pigs, donkeys and any other animal that has a relationship
with hay. While our child’s bedroom is fair game for stickers, play-doh and
grape juice, our mohair living room sofa is not up to having a gaggle of four
year olds partying on its pampered cushions.

Outside was calling and we were answering the call. We would
organize the party around the apartment complex pool. The catering department
was happy to oblige. We rented a bouncy house.
Tawney the Balloon Babe (www.balloonswithatwist)
was contacted and thankfully available. Invitations were issued and acceptances
received. It was all going terribly well.
I don’t know whether it was something she ate or a bug she
picked up at school, but the birthday morning began with my daughter vomiting
copiously all over the house (don’t worry, the mohair sofa was not hit). The
every-ten-minutes vomiting was not our only problem. The hottest day of the
year was forecast, and for once the forecast was correct. At noon, we took our ailing
daughter downstairs to greet seven friends and 110 degrees.

I have never been prouder of her. Pausing only to throw up
in the lobby downstairs, she got through the entire party like a trooper. I
hesitate to say this in Las Vegas, but Tawney’s balloons were magnificent.
Tawney came dressed as Cinderella and not only produced Dale Chihuly-worthy
balloon sculpture but painted all the children’s faces as well. Well done,
Tawney. The bouncy house was a triumph even though my daughter only ventured
inside for the benefit of a single photo-op. The food was great, although
perhaps we didn’t need the barbecue … we could have just let the food cook in
the sun. The Dora the Explorer piñata ended the party with a flourish and
everyone went home happy.
My husband and I woke up this morning as though we had both
been beaten with sticks. Our daughter bounced into our room, completely
recovered.
“Are we having another party today?” she asked brightly.
“Not today, but soon.”

“How soon?”
“As soon as you’re eighteen.”
