How Does He Do It?

I SAW A new show "The Mentalist" staring Gerry McCambridge at the Stardust Hotel. The Stardust holds a special place in my heart. I was 12 years old in 1959, and I spent my summer at the Stardust. We lived in Los Angeles, where my dad printed souvenir books for the long-running Lido Show. To save money he put together the books in Las Vegas. He sent my mom and I to Vegas, and she stapled the books together along with some Stardust employees. The Stardust paid my mom, gave us a free room and food. I had the run of the hotel; I became a 'Real George,' signing for lunches and dinners for all the kids I met around the hotel and pool. It was a great three months.

The Stardust was the brainchild of Tony Cornero. Tony was best known for his gambling ships off the coast of Southern California. In the 1930s, he owned The Rex, and as long as the ship stayed three miles out to sea, there was no law. Gamblers could take a 15-minute ride to the Rex by water taxi from the Santa Monica Pier. The Feds closed him down during World War II. However, once the war was over he bought a new ship, The Lux, and this time he ran it off the Long Beach coast. By 1948, there was a new law, no more gambling in coastal waters.

Now Tony turned his attention to Las Vegas, and building a super luxurious 1,000-room hotel & casino, The Stardust. On the morning of July 31, 1955, he was at the Desert Inn and died of a heart attack at the crap table. He was just months away from finishing his dream hotel & casino.

The Stardust today is really two hotels put together. By the time the Desert Inn owner Moe Dalitz took over and finished the Stardust, the new hotel & casino next door had already closed. This was The Royal Nevada. Rather then re-open the hotel, Dalitz and his Cleveland boys combined both properties, and for years, the Stardust was the biggest hotel & casino in the world. The plan is to demolish the Stardust at the end of this year, to make way for a new super luxurious hotel & casino.

I very much enjoyed Gerry McCambridge. It was more than I ever expected. His psychic stuff is absolutely mind-blowing. However, this is more than mind reading—he is a very, very funny man. He uses most of the people in the audience in his act. He is so quick with the comeback—a great sense of humor. In addition, he has some of the hottest babes in Las Vegas as assistants. This is an exceptionally good show, and you can take the whole family.

Although, you will be asking yourself for days, how does he do it?
