Taking
advantage of the American "dance renaissance," the Golden
Nugget's new ownership is currently presenting Simply
Ballroom, a celebration of ballroom and Latin dancing
featuring 10 world champion (in real competition) dancers
from across the globe. This production comes to Las Vegas
directly from London's West End and provides what for this
reviewer was a delightful night of entertainment.
The choreography is first class with the five renowned
couples exhibiting their considerable skill as they
demonstrate virtually every style of ballroom and Latin
dance to top notch musical accompaniment.

As good as the troupe is, the real stars of
the show are the singer/hosts Noel and Zoe. Noel has an
endearing personality and belts out one number after another
with startling acumen. Zoe is gorgeous and can also sing up
a storm. The two have great chemistry and are not only great
singers but frequently join the cast and dance with them
during ensemble numbers; they more than hold their own on
the dance floor as well.
The
show is built around a mini-dance contest with the catch
being audience participation. |

Three of the professional couples perform different styles
of dance and when finished are judged by audience applause,
with the winner receiving a $1000 bonus at the end of the
run.
By
employing this novel approach, the producers succeed in
creating an environment where the patrons feel they are an
integral part of the proceedings, clearly a clever move on
their part. My impression was that the audience really loved
this part of the show.
The
showroom itself, while rather small, lends itself perfectly
to this type of revue. The surroundings are elegant and
intimate; there is no bad seat in the house and one feels
right in the middle of the action throughout. Aside from my
personal enjoyment, what struck me most as I watched the
throng file out at show's end was that almost to a man, they
were either humming, singing or dancing their way back to
the casino; and for good reason there were smiles all
around. Simply Ballroom is simply marvelous fun. |
