He gets
better with age, not better looking, but Bill Acosta, the Man
of 1001 Voices seems to be more “right on” with his
impressions the older he gets.
Bill, an
accomplished singer in his own right, could make it just
by singing, which is how he started over 40 years ago.

The other
night at the Suncoast was the "umpteenth time" we (VCO
publisher Marleen Marino and I) had the pleasure of
watching and listening to the master singing
impressionist, this over a span of 35 years.
On this night Bill did
some of his standard routines, the most unique of
which (using a technique he calls “vocal chasing” which
allows him to glide from one impression to the next), is
a take on the “Twelve Days of Christmas” in which he
does over a dozen voices. INCREDIBLE!! |

My
favorite, that knocks me out of my seat every time, is his Jack
Nicholson routine. Just anticipating it starts me laughing even
before Bill delivers.
If you
never tire of hearing Sinatra then you will never tire of Bill
Acosta doing Old Blue Eyes. I’ve listened to many Sinatra
impressionists through the years and believe me Bill is THE best!
Speaking
of Sinatra, Bill was accompanied by an incredible band conducted
by Vinnie Falcone, who was the musical director for several
years with the original “Chairman of the Board.” Vinnie and his band did not miss a beat
and masterfully backed Bill.

Bill, a
proud dad (as well he should be) mentioned his son serving in
the Army who was stationed in Iraq and going back for another
tour, dedicated the song "Coming to America" to him. The
audience naturally feeling enthusiastically patriotic, stood and
clapped along to the song in support.
As always
"In the Wings" Jeanne Bavaro his wife, best friend, personal
manager and (I'm proud to say) fellow VCO columnist, was looking
gorgeous and taking care of business as usual!
Along with
Bill were brother and sister tap dancers Jay and Connie Fagan,
which complimented Bill on this evening, as in many engagements
past. Connie and Jay each did a outstanding solo, but
their duet is what brought the house down. They (more often then
not) sounded as one, which I guess was the whole idea. I found
myself looking away just to listen to them in sync
rat-ta-tat-tat.
