"EATIN' GOOD IN the Neighborhood" is the motto of Applebee's, a familiar family restaurant that never goes out of style. Whether you have a hungry-man appetite or just want a snack, there's something for everyone on their menu of appetizers, salads, burgers, platters, steaks, chicken, pasta and desserts.
Applebee's was recently the choice for an informal lunch gathering of the local Cactus Rose Chapter of Romance Writers of America, after their monthly meeting at the Palos Verdes Library in Henderson.
Portions are typically American, large, filling, and with some left over to take home. Listed as an appetizer, the Chicken Quesadilla Grande is two large flour tortillas stuffed with grilled chipotle chicken, melted cheese, chopped onion, fresh tomato, bacon, and jalapeños. The Appetizer Sampler includes mozzarella sticks, nachos nuevos, chicken quesadilla and Applebee's famous riblets. These are meals all by themselves.
Garden salad choices include Oriental Chicken Salad, one of Applebee's signature dishes, golden fried chicken, toasted almonds and crispy noodles on Asian greens and tossed with sliced scallions and Oriental vinaigrette. The Steakhouse Salad is a grilled sirloin steak sliced and tossed with bleu cheese vinaigrette and Caesar salad greens, topped with tomato, red onion and bleu cheese crumbles, and can be ordered in a regular size or half size portion.
Hot off the grill is Applebee's Bourbon Street Steak, a 10-ounce sirloin steeped with Cajun spices, and served with saut;eacute;ed onions, mushrooms, country potatoes and garlic toast. Fiesta Lime Chicken is a grilled boneless breast marinated in lime juice and tequila flavors topped with a Mexi-ranch and jack-cheddar sauce, and served with crisp, colorful tortilla strips, Southwest rice and pico de gallo. A more low-fat item is the Grilled Tilapia with Mango Salsa served on steamed white rice and accompanied by seasonal vegetables.
The three burger choices are each eight ounces of ground beef, grilled to medium-well unless otherwise requested. There are three Chicken Rollup choices, a Club House Grill, and BBQ Brisket Cheddar Melt Sandwich, and all burgers usually include fries.
Drinks on Applebee's menu include wines, neighborhood microbrews, and a "perfect" margarita made with Reserve 1800 Tequila, Cointreau, Grand Marnier and Applebee's special mix and freshly-squeezed lime juice.
What we'd go back for: Spinach and Artichoke Dip, the Garlic-crusted Shrimp Caesar, and perhaps to catch a glimpse of a famous romance author.
