Hairspray

In a world of lights, sirens and traffic jams, we humans can sometimes get discombobulated; that's when we need something that's going to make us laugh and forget about our troubles..."Hairspray" the current musical at the Luxor certainly does that.

This musical production is simply marvelous, including the stand out performance of Harvey Fierstein, although the entire cast seemed to enjoy performing the show as much as the audience enjoyed watching it.

Hairspray is a musical play based on a cult film of the same name written and directed by John Waters of "Pink Flamingo" fame. It is an irresistibly positive show that revolves around a hit TV show in the 1960s, an "American Bandstand" clone entitled the "Corny Collins Show" and a chubby, free-spirited young lady named Tracy Turnblad (played by Marissa Janet Winokur,) who's goal is to become a "regular" dancer on the show and at the same time, integrate it.

Hairspray brings back the wonderful music of the '60s that reminds us of such great entertainers as Sam Cooke, the Temptations, Brenda Lee and more with songs like "You Can't Stop the Beat" and "Welcome to the '60s."

We would like to send our kudos to the Hairspray marketing department for their clever advertising campaign. We feel Hairspray has surpassed any advertising campaign we've seen before, and think it was so creative including the impressive invitation they sent to the press as a can of hairspray.

Although there is not the technical presentation of a Ka or an Mystére, it is not necessary. It is the essence of pure theater reaching the heart of America with a bit of laughter and a bit of sadness in 90 minutes.
