Jack Ruby was convicted of the November 24, 1963 murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, two days after Oswald's arrest for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He successfully appealed his conviction and sentence of death. As a date for his new trial was being set, he took ill and died.
