August is Back to School and National Immunization Awareness Month. Before sending your children back to school be aware that immunization is one of modern medicine's most significant public health achievements. Vaccines have eradicated smallpox, eliminated wild poliovirus in the U.S., and significantly reduced the number of cases of measles, diphtheria, rubella and other diseases. But despite these efforts, tens of thousands of people in the U.S. still die from vaccine-preventable diseases every year. National Immunization Awareness Month reminds us that immunizations are important for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. August is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and others to talk with their doctors to make sure they’re up-to-date on their vaccinations.

The Las Vegas Marathon Launches

The Mandalay Bay Dash to Save Teachers Cash

The Las Vegas Marathon seeks to supply first-year teachers with supplies needed to kick off the school year right at the Mandalay Bay Dash on Monday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m.

The Las Vegas Marathon is collecting school supplies for first-year teachers now through Aug. 23 at Fleet Feet Sports (7591 W. Washington Ave.), The Las Vegas Marathon Offices (3153 E. Warm Springs Rd., Ste. 200) and The Athlete’s Foot (4712 W. Sahara Ave.).  All supplies collected will be presented to the Clark County School District at the Mandalay Bay Dash on Monday, Aug. 25 in the parking lot outside the Shark Reef Aquarium.

Those who bring an item to the Mandalay Bay Dash have the opportunity to participate in a 1-mile “dash” at 4 p.m. before the supplies are presented to the educators during a teacher reception at 5 p.m.  Everyone bringing a supply will receive a discount admission coupon to the Shark Reef Aquarium as well as $3-off entry into The Las Vegas Kids Marathon.

Supplies needed include books for children four to 12-years old, unused paper, index cards, rulers, glue sticks, paper towels, post-it-notes, folders, glitter, calculators and much more.   For more information on what to donate, where to drop off items, The Las Vegas Kids Marathon and the Mandalay Bay Dash, please call 702.731.1052.

The Las Vegas Marathon will take place on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at 6 a.m. at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.  Fireworks start the race as runners run down the legendary Las Vegas Strip. Contrary to previous years, The 2008 Las Vegas Marathon is limiting the number of participants.  Once 20,000 runners are signed up for the full and half marathon combined, registration will be closed.
